Description
Leche Merengada Navideña is a festive Spanish drink made with milk, sugar, and whipped egg whites, flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 large egg whites
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- Ice cubes (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Heat over medium heat until the mixture is hot but not boiling, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
- Once the milk mixture has cooled, refrigerate it for at least 2 hours or until thoroughly chilled.
- In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on medium speed until foamy. Add the cream of tartar and continue to beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add 1/4 cup of sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold the chilled milk mixture into the whipped egg whites until well combined. Be careful not to deflate the egg whites too much.
- Serve the leche merengada in glasses over ice cubes if desired. Sprinkle with additional ground cinnamon or nutmeg for garnish.
Notes
- For a festive twist, add a splash of rum or brandy to the milk mixture before chilling.
- You can substitute almond milk for a dairy-free version, adjusting the sugar to taste.
