Description

A rich and spiced Spanish hot chocolate that warms the soul.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate (70% cocoa), chopped
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows (for topping, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and water. Heat over medium heat until warm, but not boiling.
  2. Add the chopped dark chocolate and sugar to the warm milk mixture. Stir continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Stir in the ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, cayenne pepper (if using), vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Continue to heat for another 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Once heated through, remove from the heat and let it sit for a minute to thicken slightly.
  5. Serve hot in mugs, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of dark and milk chocolate.
  • Add a splash of espresso or strong coffee for a mocha twist.
