Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for icing)
- 2 tablespoons milk (for icing)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, salt, and ground cardamom. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warmed milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add the melted butter and egg to the yeast mixture, then pour this into the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms. Gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup of flour until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the softened butter for the filling evenly over the dough. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle this mixture over the buttered dough.
- Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.
- Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by whisking together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth.
- Once the rolls are done, let them cool slightly before drizzling the icing over the top. Serve warm.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, try adding a pinch of nutmeg to the filling.
- You can also substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier roll.
